Samos is part of the North-Eastern Aegean Islands and is located in the southern part of the group, near the Turkish coast, from which it is separated by the narrow Mykale Straits (3km wide). Although it's the most visited of the group, it still retains its traditional character - tiny harnours, colourful fishing boats and waterfront tavernas abound. The island is particularly green, with verdant mountains and white sandy beaches surrounded by crystal clear seas.

According to mythology Samos was the birthplace of the goddess Hera, wife of Zeus and queen of the gods, and the island is littered with ancient historical treasures. Greek monasteries, Byzantine churches and Roman temples can all be found along ancient trails.
