Pailherols is a quaint little hamlet, hidden in the rolling
mountains of the Western Auvergne, in the Cantal, on
the border with the Aveyron and about 30km from the
beautiful old town of Aurillac. Locals claim that the village
is ‘a little corner of paradise’, so lovely that people can’t
bear to leave. By way of proof, according to legend, even
the hamlet’s statue of the Madonna makes her own way
back if ever taken away!
The Plomb du Cantal, incidentally, (which enjoyed brief
fame in the best-selling book ‘Perfume’) is just to the east of
the hotel. It is the highpoint of the region (1854m) and
dominates the ski trails that criss-cross the Parc Regional
des Volcans, the biggest regional park in France.
The daily programme is led by André and is ideal for
beginners as well as those with some experience – it does
help if you have a basic knowledge of French, but it’s not
essential. On the whole, it’s gentle, wooded skiing, with
the option to try snowshoeing included in your holiday
price. Longer trips can be arranged for people looking to
improve style and technique. Should there be insufficient
snow cover at any point during the season, then a full
programme of alternative events will be arranged including
guided walks, easy mountain biking and horse-drawn
outings.
