Looking out over the white sandy bay at Porto towards the deep blue sea
Known in ancient times as 'Kaliste' meaning 'the most beautiful'

Spectacularly rugged valleys, twisted granite cliffs, snow-capped peaks

Exceptionally green island; unspoilt natural forests

Olive groves, Laricio pines, lemon trees, fragrant maquis

Great choice for walking holidays

Corsica is perhaps the most unspoiled of all the Mediterranean islands and is perfect for exploring on one of our walking holidays. It’s how the South of France must have been 50 years or so ago. There are dramatically contrasting landscapes from the deeply scented maquis to ancient chestnut forests, beautiful sandy coves to towering mountain peaks.

Much of the island is granite, either red or pink, often eroded into fantastic shapes by the sea and wind, or cut into magnificent gorges by the action of the rivers. A spectacular mountain range runs down the central spine affording unsurpassed views of the valleys and of the sea below. Elsewhere, you’ll find dense woodland, high plateaux and pretty towns and villages, steeped in history and intrigue.

Corsica offers a wonderful variety of mountain, valley and coastal walks. Inland, most of the walking is over 1000m so, whatever the time of year, it’s almost always comfortably cool. Most days in high summer, you have the chance to swim in the natural jacuzzi-style rock pools (a common feature of the region) – they’re surrounded by warm flat-top rocks, and are perfect for sun bathing. And, on the coast, of course, you’re never far from the sea.
