The Danube

The stretch of the River Danube that leads from Passau to Vienna is one of the most popular and picturesque cycling routes in Europe. For centuries the river was a critical trade route that brought wealth and prosperity to many of the towns and villages along the banks, examples of which can still be appreciated today in Krems and Melk in particular.

As you cycle down the Danube river valley the landscape changes daily, from wooded valleys to cornfields and sunflowers on the floodplains, then to vineyards and woodland again. The valley is studded with little villages, castles and monasteries too, so masses to see and do en route. And, with great rail links, it's very flexible so good for families.
