GOING IT ALONE

Solo traveller enjoying the view

On average we get 2-3 telephone calls and written enquiries every week from people who are thinking about going on holiday alone, but are nervous about making that final commitment. For some, it will be their first holiday since being single, divorced or widowed. For others, their partner simply isn’t interested in an activity-style holiday but they're still keen to give it a go. The reason doesn't really matter, as our response is always the same: if you have even the slightest urge to try it, then follow your heart and you'll discover that independent travelling can be a very rewarding experience.

Getting to your destination

It’s often the thought of getting from A to B that fills most people with dread, so anything you can do to take the stress out of your journey will be well worth it. Ask us whether your airline offers on-line check in: this allows you to print your boarding card in the comfort of your home so that you can travel to the airport safe in the knowledge that you already have your seat number. Consider using the airports' Executive Lounge - for as little as £16 you can relax in style whilst waiting for your flight to board.

Keep in mind that Headwater's hotel-to-hotel independent holidays give you maximum flexibility as you've only yourself to please! You can set off whenever you’re ready, choose when and where to stop for lunch, and plan the day around your own personal agenda. The excellent walking and cycling route notes we provide - all regularly updated and checked by us - as well as proper maps, mean you never need worry about getting lost either!

Meeting new friends

Guided group walking

If your main concern is feeling conspicuous, not being understood, or you simply don't want to be reminded that you're not part of a couple, then joining a guided holiday will help. Typically our groups are between 6-10 like-minded, often professional, people and, with around 30% of those booking being single, are perfect for those wanting to meet new friends and walk with company. They can also provide a welcome change for people used to making decisions in normal every day life, and really appreciate someone else taking control! Our leaders are especially sensitive to solo travellers and will make sure that you feel very much part of the group at all times. For many, the added reassurance that you’re not going to be eating alone in the hotel dining room in the evening is another big advantage.
